Seaside Heights, NJ (June 2009) - Seaside Heights On Wednesday, May 6, 2009, Mayor Hershey and his council adopted a resolution presented by Casey Loundy, the daughter of BID member and local Real Estate Broker, Michael Loundy of Seaside Realty Inc., proclaiming Seaside Heights a "Military - Friendly" community. Every Seaside Heights business has the opportunity to participate in a discount program that includes all active members of the Military with valid Military ID and the same for Veterans with acceptable proof of service.

Cooperating businesses have agreed to participate in this program for food, amusement parks, retail, lodging as well as parking. Members of the Military and Veterans can enjoy offers at various Seaside businesses such as free stuffed animals, buy one get one dinner entrees, parking discounts, discounted lodging and free slices of pizza. The borough of Seaside Heights is now offering their beach for free to Military personnel with a valid form of Military ID.

Casey Loundy was inspired to create this proposal when she did research on her grandfather, Sid Loundy, a World War II Veteran. Casey was assigned a school history project to interview someone affiliated with W.W.II, and by interviewing her Grandmother, Adele Loundy about her deceased grandfather, Casey pulled up various military records, such as a diary kept at the time by her aunt Leatrice Loundy, as well as a Missing in Action documents sent in 1944 from the War Department and her Grandfathers Discharge Papers. She discovered he was in the Normandy Invasion then he and the members of his unit were Captured during the Battle of the Bulge. He received many commendations including a Purple Heart that he was awarded upon his return home.

"He always had an interest [in veterans]," Casey said. "He put up veterans from all over at McGowan's Rooms, a rooming house he owned at the time... Veterans that had difficulty adapting into normal life after the service were provided food and lodging free of charge... Sid Loundy went on to be one of the founding members of American Legion Post 351 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10064 in Seaside." His family owned and operated Barney's Restaurant which was open from 1932 to 1990, he provided continuing military discounts which the family continued after his death in 1975.
