Seaside Heights, NJ (June 11, 2010) - This summer the New Jersey National Guard is hosting the Guard Fit Challenge at their new promotional booth on the boardwalk, at Blaine Avenue, in Seaside Heights. The Guard Fit Challenge press conference and grand opening will take place on Monday, June 14th at 12:00 p.m. at the new promotional booth.
"The Guard Fit Challenge is a fun and exciting way to promote fitness, the Army National Guard, and the Seaside Heights military friendly initiative" said Staff Sergeant Mike Biggins.
The Guard Fit challenge is a free, community service program for New Jersey High Schools that evaluates student's physical condition and diet. After a series of educational programs on fitness and nutrition, the Guard will return to the school to re--evaluate the students. Due to the success the Guard has had in high schools, they are bringing a 'down-sized' version of the program to Seaside Heights.
The Guard Fit Challenge booth will have their grand opening celebration on Flag Day and daily challenges continue Thursday through Monday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. all summer long. Participants will get the chance to test their push-up and sit-up skills in an endurance contest. Each participant will receive an award based on their level of achievement.
The New Jersey National Guard hopes their work in Seaside will educate not only the participants but local residents, tourists, and educators. A positive reception from the Seaside Heights community has given the Guard plans for a busy and successful summer.
"This is the first military promotional booth to be held on a boardwalk over an entire summer, so we had no idea what to expect in the beginning," said Sergeant First Class Melanie Rowton. "But because of the Seaside Heights military friendly initiative, and the overwhelming support and interest in the Guard Fit Challenge, we have had more than 300 participants a day."
"Seaside Heights is pleased that the National Guard chose our boardwalk for this initiative. The National Guard fits well with the military friendly discount program that the Seaside Heights business community offer" said Maria Maruca, Executive Director of the Seaside Heights Business Improvement District.
