Seaside Heights, NJ (July 2010) - The John J. Boyd Memorial Swim, a one-mile open swim, will be held in Seaside Heights on Sunday August 1st at 6:30 p.m. on the Lincoln Avenue beach.

The event honors the memory of former Captain John J. Boyd and is hosted by The Lifeguard Association of Seaside Heights. Registration for the event begins at 4:00 p.m. and ends at 6:00 p.m. at Hiering Avenue and the boardwalk. After registering swimmers proceed to Lincoln Avenue for the beginning of the race. Swimmers will pay a $20 registration fee that includes entrance to the beach barbeque, an awards ceremony, food, and a souvenir t-shirt.

Following the swim 92.7 WOBM will host the award ceremony for the beach barbeque where participants and spectators will be able to relax and have some great food. Non-race participants will pay a $10 entry fee for the barbeque and can purchase a souvenir t-shirt for $10.

Seaside Heights Beach Patrol Lieutenant Rob Connor, event coordinator, is expecting a large turn-out for the event due to the summer's great weather and surf conditions. "It's a great cause so each year we have had more participants than the last. We have a large group of swimmers from northern and western New Jersey and it's great to see people traveling to participate in our event," said Connor.

Swimmers travel from across the tri-state area to race in the event which is considered one of the safest ocean races in America. "The John J. Boyd swim will have lifeguards, boats, jet skis, and safety equipment to ensure our swimmers are as safe as possible, said Lieutenant Rob Connor."

Swimmers can participate in four divisions: the Open Division, High School Division, Masters (50+) Division, and the Team Title (6 Swimmers). Awards will be given to the top three male and top three female swimmers in each division.

Captain John J. Boyd created the Seaside Heights beach control nearly 70 years ago. He was a lifeguard in Seaside Heights for over fifty years and the processes he implemented are still used by the Beach Patrol today. Boyd graduated from Temple University and then spent most of his life as a resident of Seaside Heights. He served in the United States Navy Air and Sea Rescue during World War II and once served on a ship with former President Gerald Ford.

Captain John J. Boyd's founding principals of the Seaside Heights Beach Patrol, upstanding, regimented, and disciplined can still be seen today. For more information on the John J.
